Emphasis has been on building a business that caters to local customers, schools, teachers, daycares, and parents. Local is being defined as Randolph, Davidson, Chatham, Moore, and Montgomery counties. There are approximately 60 public schools and 3,000 - 4,000 teachers in this area. The budget for instructional supplies in Randolph County / Asheboro City schools exceeds $14,000,000 per year. The potential in this area is almost limitless. Anew owner will have to work from the top (Central Office) down to access these funds. Our fastest growing customer base is parents which includes our Girl Scout sales. Persuading the National Girl Scout office to allow badges sales would double GS sales.
There are no other retail business like this in any of the counties mentioned. Our closest competitor is 25 miles away. The business has a POS (point of sales) system that is used for inventory, purchasing, charges, customer billing, sales and cash receipts. Financial reporting, payroll, Accounts, Payable, Vendors, Customers, etc are processed using Quick books Pro 2008. The store has 2 networked computers, one being the back office system and the other a workstation. Both systems are running Windows XP Professional. Both systems have receipt printers, cash drawers, bar code scanners, and credit card readers. Internet access is provided by DSL connection with the telephone service provider. A multi-function laser copier/fax/printer and a multi-function color ink-jet copier/printer are connected to these computers.
We started the business in November of 1998. After 2001 we relocated 2.5 miles from our original location to take advantage of a much lower rent. We choose to relocate to the main shopping area, Randolph Mall in June 2007. We added Girl Scouts and home school consignment. Parent sales have risen 800% and Girl Scout has tripled.
