Financing a New Business

What are my financing options?

Retirement Funds: There are two ways to access retirement funds (IRAs, 401(k)s, etc.) before reaching retirement age. The first option is simply to cash out retirement funds to provide capital for a new business venture. This move, however, can result in massive taxes and early distribution penalties. An alternative to a distribution would be to directly invest your retirement funds into your business, similar to investing your funds in a publicly traded company. Retirement money can be used in this manner without incurring early distribution taxes or penalties. This funding option can provide debt-free access to an untapped cache of resources - resulting in substantially lowered overhead. There are a few companies throughout the country that can structure your retirement funds to make such an investment. For more information on this kind of financing, click here.

Home Equity Loan or Home Equity Line of Credit (HELOC): If you have built equity in your home, a home equity loan or line of credit is a viable option that can offer access to capital tied to the value of your home's equity. Rates are typically low, and the loan process is fairly quick. Your local bank or mortgage company can give you more details on rates and the loan amounts available to you.

SBA Loans: An SBA loan is a loan guaranteed for the bank by the Small Business Administration. Because the bank has a guarantor, application requirements are typically less stringent than they would be for an everyday bank loan. Most SBA lenders prefer to lend at least $100,000 and require at least 20 percent down. Interest rates are fairly moderate, ranging between 10 to 12 percent over 10 years. Contact your local SBA chapter for more information on SBA loans or visit www.sba.gov.

Unsecured Loans/Signature Loans: An unsecured loan is a loan without any collateral attached and is typically granted for amounts up to $150,000. These can be a good choice if you do not have any equity in your home or are unwilling to put your home up as collateral. Because these lenders have no recourse, they will require a high credit score and an unblemished credit history. Many unsecured lenders also require the borrower to own their own home (although the home will not be put up for collateral) and to be currently employed. Interest rates are typically high, and an initiation fee of about 10 percent is average. For more information on this kind of financing, click here.
