A fictitious business name, or DBA (short for 'doing business as') allows you to legally do business as a particular name at minimal cost, and without having to create an entirely new business entity. You can accept payments, advertise, and otherwise present yourself under that name. In fact, if you present your business under a name other than your proper legal name without proper notification, it may be considered fraud.

Good in all states, including Illinois.
Without a Illinois DBA ('Doing Business As Illinois') or Fictitious name, your Illinois business is required to operate under your personal name or names of your partners. Illinois State law requires that you file the proper paperwork in order to not only operate under another name, but even to open a bank or checking account in a name other then your own!
